Bets Off: No WPS Championship for FC Gold Pride
By: David | February 2nd, 2009Anyone care to wager on the likely regular-season champion for the inaugural Womens Pro Soccer 2009 season?
Before you put down that hard-earned cash, take note of who’s betting on which side: The MLS SJ Earthquakes released their schedule last week, and they’re hosting the Kansas City Wizards on August 22 at 7:30 pm.
That’s the same day that WPS says its regular-season winner is hosting the Championship Match.
Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the WPS playoff format! But … Uh … Oops?
FC Gold Pride will play at Buck Shaw Stadium, sharing time with the MLS San Jose Earthquakes and the Santa Clara University mens and womens soccer programs, and almost certainly getting absolute last priority when it comes to scheduling the pitch.
The schedule priority probably isn’t a big problem for games, since FCGP owner Brian NeSmith has said he wants to avoid Saturday matinees and late nights in favor of Sunday afternoons. This will help avoid conflicts with youth soccer Saturdays.
It’ll be difficult enough flooding the South Bay soccer market with two teams playing at the same stadium, but it’ll be really interesting to see what happens if the San Jose Lions FC finish atop the regular-season table.

I actually mentioned this to the dude putting together the WPS schedule today. Although I got the date wrong. Now I want San Jose Lions FC to win the league!
