FCGP Cuts Four Five; Adds a Mascot
By: David | March 24th, 2009
In the wake of the celebratory party for Brandi Chastain and Tiffeny Milbrett, comes the bad news for other players cut by the FC Gold Pride this week:
FC Gold Pride Head Coach Albertin Montoya made some roster moves on Sunday afternoon, reducing the roster size in preparation for the season. FC Gold Pride waived WPS General Draft picks Tracy Hamm and Jill Oakes and released non-roster invitees Stacy Alberico and Caitlin Fisher.
The Pride will be required to make adjustments to the roster in order to meet the league requirements of 18 rostered players and up to four developmental players which must be announced on or before Wednesday, March 25.
This especially sucks for Tracy Hamm, because she was one of the first players under contract, and also attended the Team’s name unveiling back in November.
Additional word came from Pride GM Ilisa Kessler on Monday that the team also cut Marisa Abegg, in what seemed like a gut-wrenching decision, although it’s hard to be sure with only 140 characters:
@FCGoldPrideGM: Another tough day. Last player waived today – Marisa Abegg. Albertin and staff had too much talent – every decision was tough.
In other news, the team will be adding a cuddly and lovable mascot before the Inaugural Game on April 5, and you can help pick the name. The teams wants a “clever, unique, and fierce name to exemplify both the strength of our team and the ferocity of a lioness.” The winner of the naming contest gets some cool stuff, so give it a try. Deadline for submissions is April 3rd.

With all due respect to ladies who have helped shape our women’s game, I think the way the Pride treated Tracy Hamm was outrageous. I will not be attending games ( I already paid for my two season tix) and would encourage others to write to the team as I have to express your opinion. I get that this is a business but seriously, to run off talents like Tracy and Jill Oakes for ladies who have already had their day many times over inteh past ten years is an outrage. If you really care about developing a team and a fan base, this is not the way to start. I am already disgusted. Tracy was an avid supporter and a great ambassador, in additon to being a kick-ass talent. Advice to Albertin: you should always dance with what brung ya. Foolish move and I predict it will be costly for you and the Pride.

Tracy Hamm and Jill Oakes were victims of a greedy (and none too bright) organization that ultimately cared more about selling tickets than it did the quality of play. Those 0-2 losses on the road featured the two “stars” that pushed out vibrant youth and talent. DUMB MOVE, PRIDE!!

And I thought I was the only one surprised to read Hamm got cut. Oakes too? Blergh.
