Preseason Games Across NorCal/SoCal
By: David | February 28th, 2009FC Gold Pride has announced its preseason schedule, and none of them are at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. In fact, none are in the South Bay.
The team opens its exhibition schedule against the California University Golden Bears on March 11 at 7:15 pm in Danville’s Mustang Soccer Complex, with free enrty in exchange for a minimum tax deductible donation to Gold Pride Charities.
On March 14, Gold Pride travels to Los Angeles to take on the LA Sol for two games (March 14 at 6:00 pm and again March 17, time TBA), although the second game will a closed-door affair.
The team also wants to play a game on March 21, at the University of San Francisco’s Negoesco Stadium, but hasn’t announced who they’ll be playing. And they want to play their last preseason game against the California Storm (the WPSL side, not the high school basketball club) on March 28, somewhere in Sacramento, at a still undetermined time.
The roaming exhibition schedule is an interesting strategy for the team, reinforcing their “Bay Area-ness” over their actual playing location in Santa Clara (nee San Jose). The CyberRays were originally the “Bay Area CyberRays” during their inaugural year, but then re-branded themselves the “San Jose CyberRays” after securing a playing location in SJ. It will be interesting to see if FCGP can become relevant beyond the South Bay.
