Sinclair Dreams of Canadian WPS Teams
By: David | March 20th, 2009Not so fast, you Brazilians …
The fifth international on the FC Gold Pride comes all the way from Canada (via Los Angeles), and recently Christine Sinclair called the arrival of WPS “absolutely huge” for the development of the sport.
“I think this league needs to survive just so young players out there in college, and younger than that, know that there’s somewhere to play if you don’t happen to make a national team,” she said Friday during a conference call. “For some people it’s hard to move overseas to continue your soccer career. So to have a league here in the U.S. – and hopefully it can branch out to Canada soon – it’s hugely important.” …
“I know myself this is absolutely perfect,” she said. “It’s something I’ve wanted to participate in for years. For it to be a reality is just amazing.”
Sinclair, by the way, will presumably miss the FCGP home game on Memorial Day Weekend against Los Angeles; the Pride hopes to eclipse la Sol on May 24, but Sinclair will be looking for international goal #100 when Canada plays Japan at BMO Field in Toronto on May 25. She currently sits at ninety-nine goals.
Other Canadians in WPS who would likely also miss Memorial Day games include Karina LeBlanc (LA Sol), Melissa Tancredi (St. Louis), Erin McLeod (Washington), Kelly Parker (Sky Blue FC), Candace Chapman (Boston), and Christine Latham (Boston).
