Underwhelmed by The Skort
By: David | February 25th, 2009
FC Gold Pride — and the other six WPS teams — revealed official home and away jerseys tonight in a fancy New York Fashion Week shindig, and the team has managed to turn the fashion world on its ear, grabbing the spotlight with a stunningly brilliant twist on the traditional football kit. … drumroll … Leslie Osborne wearing a Skort!
While Leslie is smiling in the official pictures, I don’t exactly see her adding the skort to the front page of her website.
I just can’t imagine the koolat-wearing fashion model sliding in between the US WNT power defender drilling a soccer ball into the upper chestal region of her alter-ego flamenco dancer. But it was nice of her to model the jerseys — even though she hasn’t technically signed a contract with the team. We are here to play soccer, right?
For the moment, I am going to reserve final judgment on the black and gold gauchos, although I am thinking you can guess where I am leaning.
Perhaps the players will shed some positive light on the new kits in the next few days that will bring me around to liking them. We’ll have to see.
Three of the seven WPS teams went with the short-skirt koolat hybrid, so maybe they know something I don’t. Have Boston, FCGP, and FC Sky Blue team scientists discovered the soccer equivalent of super high tech swimsuits that make you run faster?
And while we are at it … why not a unitard? If it’s good enough for Australia …
Oh, by the way, the jersey tops are just fine, if not a little subdued.

Love the tops for each team. But after polling the entire internet, we all agree those skorts have got to go.

The skorts are just embarrassing.

The jerseys are rather samey, but it’s a fairly well-designed sort of samey that I think I can live with. However…skorts? Ye gods. I can’t see that helping anyone take the league seriously.

Good god. Skorts? NOOOOOOOOOOO. Those are for tennis players?

Is this part of the actual kit, or just something they pulled out for the jersey unveiling.
Either way, ick.

Latest word is (thank goodness) that the skorts are an accessory, not a core part of the uniform. It will be up to the players whether they’re worn on the field. I’m expecting not.
