How Badly do the Quakes Want Me Back?

Yeah, this is a blog about the Womens Pro Soccer’s FC Gold Pride, but a true fan needs to also stay on top of the other teams in town, right?

Technically, yes, I did have season tickets to the San Jose Earthquakes last year. Actually, I’ve had Quakes tickets on-and-off since like 1975 (with my dad), and have watched and cheered for every permutation of the club – except maybe not the stupid ‘Golden Bay‘ indoor version.

But that was before the new WPS team was unveiled. So now my family (which includes only daughters) has jumped ship with season tickets to the Golden Lions.

But I am expecting one last-ditch phone call from the Quakes tonight to see if I will come back:

Dear 2008 Quakes Season Ticket Holder,

First of all, I want to extend an earnest “thanks” for your support during the 2008 season. The crowd and overall buzz surrounding Buck Shaw on game days was fantastic and I have you and others like you to thank for it. That said, I want next year to be even better, but I need your help.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that some of my players have told me that they want to be more involved in getting fans at the games because they love the atmosphere and home field advantage that you’ve created. To this end, they want to reach out to you over the phone to speak with those who haven’t yet committed to returning. You are one of these people. We’ll be here on Tuesday, Feb 10 between 6:30-8:00 pm to make the calls. Don’t worry, your sales rep will be here as well to lend assistance as needed.

We’ll be pulling out all the stops that night. Darren Huckerby has informed me of his willingness to autograph his bobblehead likeness for fans that pay in full Tuesday night. In addition, I’ll be donating my personal two on-field season tickets each game to some lucky accounts that pay in full.

I am hoping that you can find time for the call on Tuesday night as we would love to have you back in 2009. I understand that times are tough and schedules are busy, but I truly believe that the Earthquakes are the best sports value in the Bay Area and I’d like you to continue to be part of the action and excitement of Earthquakes soccer for many years to come.

I think that Darren Huckerby bobblehead was supposed to be among the Early-Bird incentives that team offered for renewals back in November. They must have a few left over.

And even though I am among the traitors, this really can’t be good news for the WPS franchise that is sharing Buck Shaw Stadium, either.
